YOUR BODY ISN'T RUSTY... YOU JUST HAVEN'T MOVED IT ENOUGH!

The Benefits of Mobility as We Age

Yo! Let's get something straight: getting older does NOT mean you're supposed to become stiff, slow, and afraid to move. Your birthday might keep going up, but your ability to move, bend, reach, rotate, squat, walk, and play doesn't have to disappear with it! I should know just having turned 43 myself. Yes, my body wants to get tight, but I’m not going to let it.

AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU!!!

But… somewhere along the way, we've accepted this ridiculous idea that aches, stiffness, poor balance, and limited movement are simply what happens when you get older.

NOPE.

Aging is inevitable.

Becoming immobile isn't.

And that's exactly why mobility training should be a major part of your fitness routine as you age.

Mobility Is More Than Stretching

When people hear "mobility," they often think about stretching.

Stretching is part of it, but mobility is much bigger.

Mobility is your ability to actively control your body through a useful range of motion.

It's being able to reach overhead.

Turn your head.

Get down to the floor.

Stand back up.

Put on your shoes.

Step over something.

Get in and out of a car.

Reach behind you.

Pick something up.

And maybe most importantly... IT’S ABOUT BEING ABLE TO keep doing the things you love.

That's what we're really talking about.

Mobility = Independence

Here's where this gets serious.

Strength is important. Cardiovascular fitness is important. Maintaining a healthy weight is important.

But if you can't move your body well enough to use those abilities, you've got a problem.

Imagine being strong enough to lift 50 pounds but not mobile enough to bend down and pick something up.

Or having great cardiovascular fitness but being afraid to step off a curb because your balance and mobility aren't there.

Fitness isn't just about what you can lift. It's about what you can DO.

That's why mobility matters so much as we age.

Good mobility can help you perform everyday activities, maintain physical independence, move with greater confidence, and continue participating in the activities that make life worth living.

Your Body Adapts to What You Do

Here's the really cool—and sometimes frustrating—thing about the human body:

It adapts.

Sit all day?

Your body gets really good at sitting.

Stop squatting?

That movement gets harder.

Stop reaching overhead?

Your shoulders may become less comfortable moving there.

Stop challenging your balance?

Your balance can decline.

But here's the GOOD news. Adaptation works both ways. You can undue everything just by starting to move again.

Therefore:

Start practicing those movements.

Start strengthening the muscles that control them.

Start challenging your balance.

Start working on your flexibility and mobility.

Your body can and will adapt to all those things. You don't need to become a contortionist. You just need to give your body a reason to keep moving. SO START!

Mobility Helps You Stay in the Game

Want to play with your grandkids?

Travel?

Garden?

Golf?

Hike?

Dance?

Get down on the floor?

Get back up?

Carry your own groceries?

Walk around the neighborhood?

Then mobility matters.

Because the goal isn't simply to live longer. The goal is to remain capable enough to actually enjoy the life you're living.

That's the difference between adding years to your life and adding life to your years.

Mobility + Strength = A Powerful Combination

Here's something I want our Wellness League clients to understand:

Don't choose between strength and mobility. Train both.

Strength gives you the ability to produce force.

Mobility gives you the ability to move.

Balance helps you control that movement.

And cardiovascular fitness gives you the endurance to keep doing it.

Put them together and you've got something far more valuable than a number on a scale. You've got function.

And function is what allows you to remain independent.

You Don't Have to Be Young to Get Better

This might be my favorite part. because over the years I've worked with hundreds of people who thought they were simply "too old" to improve.

BUT… Then we start training.

And after awhile… SURPRISE:

They move better.

They get stronger.

They become more confident.

They stand taller.

They start doing things they had stopped doing. And suddenly, something changes. They stop thinking about what their age says they can't do... and start discovering what their body still can do.

That's the magic of movement.

At Wellness League, we believe fitness should prepare you for life, not just the gym.

You don't have to move like you did at 25.

You just need to keep moving toward being the best-moving version of yourself today.

So Get Up. Move Around. Do Something.

Stretch.

Walk.

Squat.

Reach.

Rotate.

Balance.

Lift.

Play.

Dance in your kitchen if that's what it takes; I don't care what you do. Just don't let your world get smaller because your body stopped moving. Your body wasn't designed to spend 10 hours in a chair and then wonder why everything feels stiff.

It was designed to move.

So give it what it needs.

Move today. Move tomorrow. Keep moving for the rest of your life. Because getting older isn't the end of your adventure. It's just another reason to make sure you're physically capable of enjoying it.

Nate's Wisdom

"Don't train just to look good in the mirror. Train so you can still get off the floor, chase your grandkids, carry your groceries, climb the stairs, and say YES when life gives you an opportunity."
