Why Muscle Is the Organ of Longevity: a cautionary tale part 1
Friends and fellow Wellness Leaguers…
For years we’ve been told that heart health is the key to living longer. And don’t get me wrong—cardiovascular health absolutely matters. Your heart is the engine that keeps everything running.
But modern science is beginning to shine a brighter light on something those of us in the world of exercise science have known for a long time…
There’s another powerful factor that may be just as important for longevity.
Muscle.
And not just muscle for looking good in a T-shirt. Or without … if the gym bro’s are being honest! But rather looking at:
Muscle as a metabolic organ.
Muscle as protection against disease.
Muscle as the foundation for independence, strength, and vitality as we age.
In fact, research is increasingly showing that maintaining muscle mass and strength may be one of the most powerful predictors of how well (and for how long) we live.
Yes… muscle is the true currency that we need to focus on as we age.
Not big bodybuilder muscle. Not beach-flexing muscle. BUT functional muscle mass, the kind that helps you stand up from a chair, carry groceries, climb stairs, and stay independent as you age.
In the world of modern health science, muscle is increasingly being referred to as “the organ of longevity.”
Muscle Is More Than Movement
Most people think that muscle exists simply to move our bodies. But research has constantly shown over the last two decades that skeletal muscle functions almost like an endocrine organ, meaning it releases important chemical signals called myokines.
These myokines communicate with other parts of the body and help regulate:
Blood sugar
Inflammation
Immune function
Brain health
Fat metabolism
In other words, muscle doesn’t just move your body, it actually helps to run your entire FREAKING physiological system.
So, as you build and once you maintain muscle through strength training, your body becomes better at managing glucose, reducing chronic inflammation, and supporting metabolic health. These factors are all strongly linked to longer lifespan and reduced disease risk.
Muscle Protects Against Aging
One of the biggest health risks associated with aging is something called sarcopenia. As I have discussed before, sarcopenia is the natural loss of muscle mass and strength as we grow older.
Beginning around age 30, adults can lose 3–8% of muscle mass per decade, and that loss tends to accelerate after age 60. When muscle declines, several other health problems often follow:
Increased fall risk
Slower metabolism
Loss of independence
Higher risk of chronic disease
But the good news is that strength training can dramatically slow this… or hell, in some cases it will even reverse this process.
And that’s super important because people who maintain muscle mass as they age often experience:
Better balance
Stronger bones
Improved metabolic health
Greater independence later in life
In other words, muscle doesn’t just make you stronger—it helps keep you functional, capable, and resilient.
Muscle Improves Metabolic Health
Muscle tissue is also the primary site for glucose storage and usage in the body. That means when you have more muscle, your body is better at handling carbohydrates and maintaining stable blood sugar levels.
This is one reason why strength training has become such a powerful tool for preventing and managing conditions like:
Type 2 diabetes
Insulin resistance
Metabolic syndrome
More muscle means your body becomes more efficient at using energy instead of storing it as fat.
And the benefits don’t stop there.
Research also shows that maintaining muscle mass is strongly linked to lower mortality risk—meaning people with greater muscle strength tend to live longer, healthier lives.
BUT…..
Strength Training Is the Key
The most effective way to build and maintain muscle is through progressive and consistent strength training. OVER TIME!!!
This doesn’t mean lifting extremely heavy weights or training like a professional athlete. In fact, some of the most effective programs focus on simple, functional movements performed consistently over time.
For beginners and aging adults especially, strength training provides benefits like:
Improved posture
Joint stability
Increased mobility
Reduced injury risk
At Wellness League, we specialize in helping exercise beginners and aging adults safely build strength, because we know muscle is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your long-term health.
The Bottom Line
If you want to live longer, stay active, and maintain independence as you age, building muscle may be one of the most important things you can do.
Think of muscle as your body’s engine for longevity.
It regulates metabolism, protects your bones and joints, stabilizes blood sugar, and keeps you strong enough to enjoy life for decades to come.
And the best part?
It’s never too late to start.
