YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM ISN’T A SUPERHERO… BUT YOU CAN GIVE IT A FIGHTING CHANCE BY FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE!
Yo! After spending four weeks fighting the leftovers of some seriously nasty bronchitis, I have developed a newfound appreciation for something I used to take completely for granted:
BREATHING. CARDIO. BREATHING. VIBRANCY…. did I mention BREATHING?
Seriously.
I've done the antibiotics. I've done the steroids. I've used the inhalers. I've coughed, wheezed, hacked, slept, rested, coughed some more, and four weeks later I'm now finally starting to feel human again.
And let me tell you something:
Friends… You do NOT want this.
So, with flu and respiratory-virus season approaching, I started thinking about what we can actually do to give ourselves a better shot at staying healthy.
And there's something important I want to clear up right away.
🛑 YOU CAN'T “BOOST” YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM LIKE A CAR ENGINE
You'll see this kind of advertisement everywhere:
“BOOST YOUR IMMUNITY!” PAY US…. MILLIONS!
Take this supplement! Drink this! Eat that! Buy this mystery powder that apparently contains the secrets of the universe! But your immune system isn't a battery that you can simply charge to 110%.
In fact, our immune systems are an incredibly complicated network that depend on our overall health status. For example, getting adequate nutrients, being physically active, getting enough sleep, managing stress, maintaining a healthy weight, and keeping up with recommended vaccines all support normal immune function.
And with all of this, the goal isn't to simply turn yourself into an immune-system superhero. The goal is to stop making your body fight with one hand tied behind its back. It’s time to give it what it needs!
FIRST THINGS FIRST: GET SERIOUS ABOUT THE FLU VACCINE
Let's start with the big one, and seriously, this shouldn’t be anywhere NEAR as controversial as people make it.
For the 2026–27 flu season, the CDC says everyone 6 months and older should receive a seasonal flu vaccine, with vaccination being the most important step for reducing the risk of flu and its potentially serious complications.
Does getting vaccinated guarantee you won't get the flu?
No.
But vaccination can reduce your risk and can also reduce the severity of illness if you do get sick.
That's a pretty good reason to have the conversation with your healthcare provider.
NEXT… YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM LIKES REAL FOOD
Here's where I'm going to sound like a personal trainer again. Too bad I’m just a lowly Medical Exercise Specialist, but… either way:
Eat your dang vegetables.
Your body needs vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fats, fiber, and plenty of other nutrients to function properly.
A varied, nutritious diet helps provide the nutrients your immune system needs. Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals can impair immune function—but if you're not deficient, simply taking huge amounts of supplements isn't a magic shield against infection.
Think:
🥦 Vegetables
🍓 Fruits
🥩 Quality protein
🌾 Whole grains
🥜 Nuts and seeds
🫘 Beans and legumes
🥑 Healthy fats
In other words...
Eat food that looks like it came from Earth, not a laboratory.
BUT WHAT ABOUT VITAMIN C? VITAMIN D? ZINC? ALL THE STUFF?
This is where things get interesting. There are plenty of vitamins, minerals, herbs, probiotics, and supplements marketed for immune health. And some definitely have legitimate roles in the body. But more isn't automatically better, and there isn't a magic supplement proven to prevent the flu.
The NIH notes that getting adequate vitamins and minerals is important for immune function, but for people without a deficiency, routinely taking extra micronutrients generally doesn't prevent infections or make them recover faster.
So, before you start swallowing half the vitamin aisle at the grocery store: Talk to your doctor. Especially if you take medications, have a medical condition, are pregnant, or are considering high doses of anything.
A supplement that is appropriate for one person may not be appropriate for another.
SLEEP IS NOT LAZY: IT’S NECESSARY
This one might be my favorite. We live in a culture that sometimes treats sleep like a weakness. Ever hear the old MOTTO:
“I'll sleep when I'm dead.”
Cool.
But I'd rather you sleep so you don't feel like you're dead. 😂
That’s right friends, your body does an enormous amount of work while you're sleeping, and getting adequate sleep is one of the basic habits associated with maintaining overall health and healthy immune function.
So if you're constantly getting five hours of sleep, pounding caffeine all day, running on stress, and wondering why you feel like garbage...
Maybe your body isn't asking for another supplement. Maybe it's asking for a freaking nap.
KEEP MOVING—BUT DON'T BE STUPID ABOUT IT
Regular physical activity is part of a healthy lifestyle and supports overall health. But here's where I want to make something very clear:
More exercise isn't always better.
If you're healthy and feeling good, regular exercise is fantastic.
But if you're sick? YOU BETTER listen to your body.
You don't get extra credit for dragging yourself into the gym while you're coughing up a lung.
And if you're dealing with significant respiratory symptoms, fever, unusual shortness of breath, chest pain, or worsening symptoms, it's time to talk with your healthcare provider rather than trying to “sweat it out.”
YEP, STRESS MATTERS TOO
Here's something we don't talk about enough:
Your health isn't just what you eat and how much you exercise. It's also how you live.
Constant stress. Poor sleep. No recovery. Poor nutrition. Sitting all day. Never slowing down.
Eventually, your body notices.
You don't have to eliminate every stressful thing in your life—that's probably impossible. But finding ways to manage stress, get outside, spend time with people you love, laugh, move, and actually give yourself some recovery time can all be part of a healthier lifestyle.
Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is stop trying to be productive for five minutes.
DUH, WASH YOUR HANDS. YES, REALLY.
I know.
Your mother told you this when you were six. And guess what, she was onto something.
Washing your hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces can all help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses.
And if you're sick?
Please don't be the person who brings their plague to work because “it's just a little cough.”
Stay home when appropriate. Give other people some space.
Your coworkers would like to keep their lungs, thank you very much.
LET THE AIR MOVE
Respiratory viruses spread through the air, so indoor air quality matters. The CDC recommends steps such as bringing in fresh outdoor air, improving indoor air filtration, or gathering outdoors when practical. Cleaner air can reduce exposure to respiratory viruses.
And honestly?
This is another reason I love getting people outside when the weather cooperates.
Fresh air + movement + sunshine + a little human interaction?
I'll take it.
NOW, WHAT IF YOU ACTUALLY GET THE FLU?
This is where preparation really matters.
If you develop flu symptoms and you're at higher risk for complications—or you're very sick or worried about your symptoms—contact your healthcare provider promptly.
Prescription antiviral medications can help treat influenza, and they work best when started early—ideally within the first 1–2 days after symptoms begin. They're particularly important to discuss promptly with a healthcare professional if you're at increased risk for serious complications.
And here's a BIG one:
ANTIBIOTICS DON'T TREAT THE FLU.
Antibiotics fight bacteria. Influenza, though it is a BASTARD, it is caused by a virus.
So don't raid your medicine cabinet and start taking leftover antibiotics because you're feeling miserable. That's not how this works.
KNOW WHEN “I'LL JUST WAIT IT OUT” IS A BAD IDEA
Most people with flu have mild illness and recover without needing medical care.
But some people are at greater risk of serious complications—including adults 65 and older, young children, pregnant women, and people with certain chronic medical conditions.
And if you're experiencing emergency warning signs such as difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, persistent chest or abdominal pain or pressure, confusion, severe weakness, or other serious symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
Don't try to win an argument with your body. Sometimes the smartest fitness decision you can make is knowing when you need a doctor.
DO YOU HAVE YOUR “DON'T GET YOUR BUTT KICKED BY FLU SEASON” PLAN
You don't need a magical immune-boosting potion.
You need the boring stuff.
And here's the funny part:
The boring stuff works. Here’s how!
Build your foundation WITH THE COACH NATE BLUEPRINT:
Stay current on recommended vaccines
Eat a nutritious, varied diet
Stay hydrated
Get enough sleep
Stay physically active
Manage stress
Wash your hands
Improve indoor air quality
Cover coughs and sneezes
Stay home when you're sick
Know when to call your doctor
Talk to your healthcare provider before starting supplements
None of that sounds particularly sexy. But neither does spending four weeks wheezing like an asthmatic accordion. Trust me.
AND REMEMBER, HEALTH IS SOMETHING YOU BUILD BEFORE YOU NEED IT
This is really what Wellness League is all about.
We talk about strength.
We talk about mobility.
We talk about nutrition.
We talk about sleep.
We talk about healthy aging.
We talk about getting outside and moving your body.
But all of these things are connected. You don't build a healthy body because you know exactly when you'll need it. You build it because you don't. And unfortunately, you’ll never know when life is going to throw a curveball.
You don't know when you'll encounter a virus.
You don't know when you'll have an injury, a stressful season, a sleepless week, or some other challenge.
But you can work on your foundation. And isn’t that the goal?
Not to be perfect. Just to stack the deck in your favor.
Because I can tell you from personal experience...
BREATHING IS PRETTY AWESOME.
And after four weeks of bronchitis, I'm not taking it for granted anytime soon.
One Last Important Note
This article is general health information, not personalized medical advice. Talk with your doctor or qualified healthcare professional about your individual flu risk, vaccination, medications, nutrition, vitamins, and supplements: especially if you have chronic health conditions or take prescription medications.
And please don't start taking high-dose vitamins or supplements just because someone on the internet told you they're an “immune booster.” The evidence doesn't support treating supplements as a magic shield against the flu.
Take care of yourself. Take care of each other. And for the love of all things holy… wash your hands. 😂
Nate's Wisdom
“You don't have to make your body invincible. You just need to stop making it fight unnecessary battles.”
Now, go fourth and PROSPER, your body, mind, FAMILY, and community will thank you!
Final Thought ( COACH Nate Style)
Friends, consistency is always going to be key when forming a new habit or mastering a new skill. Exercise is no different. You have to put in the time, and that means showing up when you don’t want to. Motivation only lasts so long. But that’s why having a coach matters! We’ll give you something to look forward to, even if it’s not the exercise (so much). So invest in yourself and find you the best coach out there… oh ya, btw, I know a place!
