The Secret I Finally Discovered About Lazy Days (And Why It Might Be the Best Fitness Advice You'll Ever Hear)

By COACH Nate of Wellness League – Wichita’s elite Private Personal Training option

Let's be honest my friends... Even us personal trainers have days when we don't feel like working out. Yes... it really happens.

Hell, there are mornings when I'd rather stay in bed; or afternoons when work has drained every ounce of motivation that I had for the week. Sometimes even evenings when the couch looks a whole lot more appealing than the gym.

For years, I thought something was wrong with me. I couldn’t understand why I wasn’t as motivated as other wannabee fitness experts. But then it happened… and it changed my life and the way I approach exercise.

The Secret? Stop Trying to Have the Perfect Workout.

Most people think every workout has to be amazing.

Heavy weights.
Personal records.
Sweat pouring.
Complete exhaustion.

But that's not reality. The truth is, some of the best workouts you'll ever have begin with one simple decision: Just show up.

Not to break records. Not to set personal bests. Just to win by showing up. It’s ok to go ahead and tell yourself you'll walk on the treadmill for ten minutes. Or just pedal on a bike. Or stretch. Or perform a few light exercises. If you get rocking and that’s all you have, that's ok. YOU WIN!

No pressure. No guilt. No impossible expectations. And ironically, that's usually when the magic happens.

What I Do Every Time I Feel Lazy

Whenever I don't feel like exercising, I follow the exact same routine.

I grab my PVC pipe and run through my mobility progression. (If you're a Wellness League client, you probably smiled because you've done it hundreds of times.)

Then I head straight to one of my favorite exercises... The Single-Leg Leg Press to get things moving in the right direction.

Nothing complicated. Nothing impressive. I just start.

I begin with a very light weight.

  • 10 reps using both legs

  • 8 reps on the right leg

  • 8 reps on the left leg

  • 20 calf raises

Then I repeat. That's it. No superhero workout. No crazy intensity. Just movement. But guess what… by the second or third time through… Something incredible almost always happens.

My joints loosen up. My breathing settles. My brain wakes up. AND the excuses begin disappearing.

Five minutes ago I didn't even want to be there. But now... I'm ready to train. And I’m ready to go hard!

Here's What Science Says About Motivation

Most people believe motivation comes first. It doesn't. Action comes first.

Research in psychology consistently shows that taking even a small action creates momentum. Once your body begins moving, your brain often follows. Your heart rate increases, blood flow improves, endorphins begin circulating, and suddenly the workout that felt impossible starts to feel... possible.

That's why waiting to "feel motivated" is one of the biggest mistakes people make.

Motivation usually arrives after you begin.

Progress Isn't Built on Perfect Days

At Wellness League, we work with adults who are often in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and beyond. Many of our clients are just beginning their fitness journey, while others are returning after years away from exercise.

One thing they all have in common? They've learned that consistency beats perfection. Friends, seriously… You don't have to win every workout. You simply have to keep showing up.

Some days you'll feel incredible. Some days you'll simply go through the motions. Some days you’ll leave after the warmup. And that’s ok because they all count in the grand scheme of things.

That is:

Every workout is another deposit into your total health and overall well-being.

Every workout makes the next one a little easier.

Why This Matters Even More as We Age

As we get older, maintaining strength, balance, and muscle becomes increasingly important.

Regular resistance training can help:

  • Maintain lean muscle mass

  • Improve balance and stability

  • Reduce the risk of falls

  • Support healthy joints

  • Increase energy levels

  • Make everyday activities easier

  • Improve overall quality of life

The goal isn't to become a bodybuilder. The goal is to keep doing the things you love.

Playing with your grandkids. Traveling. Gardening. Walking without pain. Living independently.

Those victories are built one workout at a time.

The Wellness League Difference

At Wellness League, we understand that every person starts somewhere.

That's why we specialize in private, one-on-one personal training in Wichita, Kansas, designed especially for:

  • Anyone looking for a safe, supportive environment

We don't expect perfection.

We simply help you take the next step.

Because that's where lasting change begins.

The Challenge

The next time you don't feel like exercising, don't tell yourself you have to crush an hour-long workout.

Tell yourself this instead:

"I'm just going to show up."

Walk for five minutes.

Stretch.

Do a few exercises.

If that's all you do...

You still win.

But don't be surprised if five minutes turns into thirty.

It happens more often than you think.

The Bottom Line

The strongest people aren't always the most motivated.

They're the ones who show up even when motivation is nowhere to be found.

So stop chasing perfect workouts.

Start chasing consistency.

Because the life you want doesn't begin when you feel motivated...

It begins the moment you decide to take that first step.
